Immediate Dentures

Immediate Dentures are false teeth provided to you, upon your request, by your dentist after the extraction of some or all of your teeth. Most patients request for immediate dentures to prevent themselves from embarrassment of having no teeth.

How are Immediate Dentures made?

Before a patient undergoes an extraction, the Dental Prosthetist makes an impression of your teeth and makes it the base of the immediate dentures that you asked for. You can ask them to improve it’s appearance if that is what you wish for.

After the extraction of your teeth, the immediate dentures are then places as a replacement for the extracted teeth. The immediate dentures will make interaction with other people after the extraction less embarrassing for the patient.

Do I need to replace my Immediate Dentures after a while?

Because immediate dentures were not fitted before being made, it may not be as strong or fully fitted to you. This is especially because the gums tend to shrink a few weeks after the extraction of your teeth. This is natural as it is a part of the healing process of the gums.

To make sure that the immediate denture works and fits well, follow up and maintenance are required. Upon check-ups, your dental prosthetist may require you to improve the immediate denture by putting temporary lining and/ or tissue conditioners. The process may have to be repeated until your gums have healed fully.

Once your gums are healed fully:

  • You can choose to have a new and permanent denture fitted and made or you can still use the immediate denture but with the permanent reline so that a perfect fit of the denture to your gums are insured.
  • Payments for the additional tissue conditioners, liners and relines are separate from the payments for the immediate denture.
  • Damage can occur if the immediate dentures are not remodeled or relined after the gums have initially healed.
  • Dentures in general must be checked for possible relining, remodeling or replacement every two years.
